You might think you are cool, but here at TCM we have a host of stars and movies that make us the undisputed ‘home of cool’. This March we are bringing you ‘The Essence of Cool’ a season that is so cool it hurts!
To make sure you are ready for it, we have compiled a list of the coolest lines ever used in movies:
• In at number ten is ‘Show me the money’ taken from the film Jerry Maguire (1996). This famous line was said by actor Cuba Gooding Jr, who won a Oscar® in the category, Best Supporting Actor, for this film.
• ‘Mrs Robinson, you’re trying to seduce me,’ is the next coolest quote from The Graduate (1967) starring Dustin Hoffman and Anna Bancroft as Mrs Robinson. Their performances were show stoppers but they were not the first contenders for the lead roles, Warren Beatty, Robert Redford and Patricia Neal were all considered for the star parts.
• Cool Hand Luke (1967) features the ‘what we’ve go here is…failure to communicate,’ and was said by Strother Martin who was often cast alongside the blue eyed man himself, Paul Newman.
• British agent, James Bond was sure to be featured in this list and this is his first cool line, ‘The name’s Bond, James Bond,’ This was in the first James Bond film Dr No in 1962 and used in every one since!
• ‘I’ll be back’ is a world famous movie phrase used by the young and old. It was taken from the film The Terminator and said by the man himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger. One afternoon during a break in filming, Schwarzenegger went into a restaurant in downtown L.A. to get some lunch and realised all too late that he was still in Terminator makeup - with a missing eye, exposed jawbone and burned flesh!
• In at number five is, ‘Go ahead, make my day’ from the film Sudden Impact (1983). The famous "Make My Day" sequence was filmed at a Burger Island restaurant in San Francisco, it is now a McDonald's!
• ‘Shaken, not stirred’ the second line to be taken from the James Bond series, and one that is used in bars and pubs globally!
• ‘The force will be with you, always’ enters at number three. It is taken from Star Wars and said by one of the leading characters, Obi-Wan Kenobi.
• Casablanca is the runner up but we still think it is a fantastic quote, ‘Of all the gin joints on all the towns in all the worlds, she walks into mine.’ Off the set, he and Ingrid Bergman hardly spoke during the filming of Casablanca. She said later, "I kissed him but I never knew him", another great line!
• In at number one is ‘I’ll make him an offer he can’t refuse’ taken from the Oscar® winning film The Godfather. Before being cast as Michael Corleone, Al Pacino was committed to starring in Bang the Drum Slowly (1973). Francis Ford Coppola pulled some strings and managed to get Pacino released and that fantastic line lands our number one place.
So get the shades out and put the bling on and tune into the ‘Essence of Cool’ in March on TCM as we focus on some of the coolest stars in Hollywood, including the king of cool, Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Michael Caine and Frank Sinatra.
