Courage is the type of devoted dog that anyone would be pleased to call a friend. Abandoned as a pup, he was found on the side of a highway, dirty and malnourished, by a kind old woman (Muriel). She fed him, bathed him, and named him Courage for surviving in the big bad world alone. For these acts of kindness, Courage would do absolutely anything to protect her from harm. And in return, he wants nothing more than to sit in her lap all day and be petted.
Unfortunately Muriel is not alone. She is married to Eustace the farmer who takes great delight in trying to scare Courage to death. Despite the fact that Muriel is the only person that he really trusts whenever danger looms it is the farmer that he finds himself clinging to.
As a guard dog courage is suspicious of anything and anyone unfamiliar having a tendency to anticipate the worst case scenario. Deep down Courage is worried something will happen to Muriel and he will find himself abandoned once again. In order to combat any looming danger Courage had buried a selection of props all over the farm, which will enable him to protect his owners. When he needs anything he always knows where to dig it up. Well nearly always!
Courage connects to the outside world through a computer in the farmhouse attic, which enables him to amass information without having to rely on Muriel and the Farmer.
Most of the time Courage moves around like a human except when in the company of the farmer when he reverts to true doggy like behaviour. Courage communicates his concerns to his owners through a series of exaggerated charades but will communicate directly to the audience delivering such pithy remarks as ‘Something Fishy’s going on here or my name’s not Laramore - and it isn’t.’
Muriel
Muriel loves Courage as though he were her own son. The farmer brought Muriel back to Nowhere USA, after he went on a livestock buying expedition to Scotland and brought back a wife instead.
Unlike Courage Muriel is traditional and uncomplicated and can find good in anything liking nothing better to relax in her rocking chair with a cup of tea, Courage on her lap and a good programme on the telly.
Although Muriel hates scary movies she is quite likely to invite a giant hovering brain inside for a meal. Refusing to acknowledge that anything nasty could happen in her home anything unpleasant is either ignored or befriended.
Eustace ‘The Farmer’
The Farmer is Muriel’s husband and is one of the old school. He doesn’t make small talk and expects his dinner on the table on time. When he encounters a problem his combination of ignorance and arrogance usually means he ends up getting the worst of the situation. His real name is Eustace Hoebagge. He is jokingly referred to as the farmer because that was his first profession before he lost everything except that is the farmhouse. The farmer doesn’t really like Courage seeing him as a ‘scaredy-dog’ and gets his kicks scaring the living jeepers out of Courage which gives him a great laugh. When not listening to Jim Morrison, working on his old pickup or signing up for courses he just likes to be left alone to read his newspapers.
Nowhere USA
Nowhere USA is located in the middle of America, but nobody cares precisely where. Originally the town was nothing more than a sign on a road saying you are now here. Over tine, the smudged sign came to read you are nowhere. And the name stuck. The locals however insist that it is pronounced Now Here and are forever correcting visitors. Nowhere is peopled by small town eccentrics. The postman is French and rumoured to be on the run. Each day he teaches Courage a new phrase. In the local hardware store everything has to be bought by mail ordered, as there is nothing on the shelves. The town Grocer is a cheerful but resentful single mother whose Siamese twin girls play piano in a local bar while they wait for their big break.
