When danger looms in Townsville, the call goes out for Bubbles, Blossom and Buttercup - the Powerpuff Girls - who fly into action against villains to save the day before bedtime!
Working late one night, Professor Utonium, a lonely genetic engineer, was about to realise his lifelong dream: the creation of a perfect little girl using sugar, spice and everything nice. When the concoction was nearly complete, the Professor haphazardly added a fourth ingredient to the stew …. Chemical X. The addition of this toxic glop set off an explosive chain reaction of elements which resulted in the creation of those sugar-coated flying superheroes who can protect the town from any bad guys - The Powerpuff Girls.
The Powerpuff Girls was written and created by Craig McCracken.
She’s the indisputable leader and spokesperson with fiery red hair tied up in her trade mark red bow. Her perfect combination of brains and beauty often saves the day.
Despite having just learned the alphabet and having to be in bed by eight o’clock, Blossom takes her responsibilities seriously, giving her an aura that goes well beyond her years.
She is the child who thinks she needs to be an adult. The funny thing is her idea of what an adult is, can be a bit childish. So no matter how hard she tries, Blossom, the perpetual Girl Scout is indeed a little girl.
Bubbles is the golden haired angel. The pigtailed happy go lucky one of the three, always seeing the best in everything. Although sometimes a bit over sensitive, nothing riles her more than seeing someone wronged.
Bubbles wears her heart on her sleeve, leaving you in no doubt as to her emotional state, but whether it be happy or sad, you can be assured it’s heart felt. It’s these lively emotions that inject the laughter, fun and spirit into the Powerpuff Girls’ numerous adventures.
Buttercup is the Powerpuff Girl with attitude and a volcanic temper. There’s nothing she likes better than getting to grips with her enemies and is often frustrated when she is held back by Blossom and Bubbles. She secretly feels she should be their leader.
She is very ‘Zen’ and disciplined and battles against a constant demon, that of being seen as girlish! The ultimate tomboy, Buttercup’s philosophy is to hit first and ask questions later.
Although this attitude makes her the most courageous of the girls it can also backfire making her, her own worst enemy. But don’t let the hard exterior fool you, beneath it all she is just a little girl.
The man who inadvertently created The Powerpuff Girls, The Professor is a man’s man. A neat, organised, punctual, slipper wearing, early to bed, early to rise, whiter than white kind of a guy always ready with a never ending source of good practical advice.
He’s a modern man with 1950’s sensibilities. He missed out on all that new man kind of stuff. In his world, things are right or wrong, good or bad, there is no middle ground. It is this viewpoint he adopts as he tries to raise the girls. It is this stiffness that balances his family.
The Powerpuff Girls in keeping with all superheroes have a series of dastardly enemies all fitting into one of the stereotypical, bad guy categories: Angry, Insane, Evil, Megalomanic and Stupid.
He is their archest villain always out to conquer the world and man. He used to be a happy go lucky chimp but after being caught in the explosion that created the Powerpuff Girls he became one of the most sinister criminal minds ever.
He may look like a cute furry hillbilly but generations of inbreeding have created a loose canon. If anything upsets him, whether it be a broken string on his banjo or even just boredom his answer is to kill the Powerpuff Girls. Unfortunately anything that gets in his way is also likely to suffer.
A nasty piece of work who gets his kicks from toying with and testing the Powerpuff Girls. With the ability to warp time and space he is secretly a little bit worried about the power of the Powerpuff Girls which is why he is always devising fiendishly devious schemes in order to test them.
They barely have enough combined brainpower to wake up in the morning let alone commit a major crime. What they spend most of their time doing is trying to impress the Powerpuff Girls by being as bad as they can – which in their case doesn’t amount to much. Their leader Boss man once managed to pinch an orange from a market stall. The Powerpuff Girls think they’re cute and harmless. Members include Boss Man (dumb), Skinny Peter (dumber) and Junior (IQ of an amoeba).
He is bent on world domination. A roach in the robotic body of a man he has a drill sergeant’s mentality and is the most brilliant of all bugs. Along with his fellow cockroaches he plans to infest… uh conquer the world!
Blossom: I think school is a wonderful place for a child to receive their education so they succeed in life.
Bubbles: I don’t like it ‘cause at the end of the day I have to leave.
Buttercup: I don’t.
Blossom: That’s a good question. I think evil is bad because it does not do any good.
Bubbles: (begins to cry uncontrollably)
Buttercup: Keeps me busy.
Blossom: What I want is world peace and a new dress.
Bubbles: Sweets. Oh, and a pony.
Buttercup: To leave.
Blossom: I hate that there is no world peace and that my dress is hot pink.
Bubbles: Not having candy and ponies…oh yeah and evil.
Buttercup: Evil.
Blossom: I love my sisters, I love Professor Utonium and I love being a super hero.
Bubbles: Buttercup, Blossom, Professor, teacher, my shoes, flying, nice things etc, etc
Buttercup: Fighting
Blossom: I would go to the government and buy world peace, and then a new dress.
Bubbles: Comb them, my Suzy Sparkle has at least a million doll’s hairs.
Buttercup: Wait for someone to steal it so I could beat them up.
Blossom: Yes I know the alphabet forwards and backwards.
Bubbles: Yes, but not in order.
Buttercup: You callin’ me stupid.
Blossom: Yes I sometimes watch tv but not all the time. I watch smart shows with the Professor and cartoons when I want to laugh.
Bubbles: Cartoons!!!
Buttercup: Duh, cartoons!
Blossom: Well, in truth I never stop saving the world because I recycle.
Bubbles: Well, we save the world a lot but when we don’t I save tin foil.Buttercup: Look for fights.
Blossom: If I did not have superpowers I would still have super powers because everything on earth has a super power in its own special way.
Bubbles: Same stuff ‘cept fly.
Buttercup: What would you do if I shoved that tape recorder up your nose?

Craig McCracken attended Cal Arts (California Institute of the Arts) where he produced eight student films. Five of them featured a character called No Neck Joe and appeared in Spike and Mike’s Festival of Animation. While there, he also started an ongoing collaboration with Dexter’s Laboratory creator Genndy Tartakovsky with whom he has continued to work since 1990.
It was in his second year at Cal Arts that the idea for Powerpuff Girls was first conceived, inspired by a student short he had made called the Whoopass Girls which played at the 1994 festival of animation. There followed two successful shorts in the ‘World Premiere Toons’ series, based on the Powerpuff Girls - Meat Fuzzy Lumpkins and Crime 101 voted as viewer’s favourites in both the 1995 and 1996 New Year’s Eve ‘World Premiere Toons Countdown’ show. Hanna Barbera had harnessed Craig McCracken’s talents in the past, as art director on the series 2 Stupid Dogs.
