 For young high-school student Tenchi Masaki his curiosity about his family’s forbidden shrine will change his life forever. After stealing the key to the gate that blocks the shrine’s entrance, Tenchi’s explorations inadvertently wakes the sleeping demon...
Tenchi Masaki thought he was an ordinary teenager, until the day he accidentally unlocks the seal on the Masaki family shrine, where legend has it that a “demon” lives called Ryoko. At the same time, he discovers that he is a descendant of the Juraian Royal Family and that his grandfather is the Crown Prince. Once the “demon” Ryoko has been released, after 700 years imprisonment, she takes on the form of a beautiful woman, and poor Tenchi’s life is turned upside down.
Shortly after unsealing Ryoko, Tenchi suddenly acquires some out-of-this-world guests, literally. Ryoko’s friends and enemies soon learn that she has been released and the arrival of alien princess Aeka, her sister Sasami, Ryo-Oh-Ki, ditzy space-cop Mihoshi and mad scientist Washu cause havoc for poor Tenchi. Since then he's flown to distant planets, defeated powerful villains like Kagato and even travelled through time!
The focus of the show, Tenchi is a patient, calm 17 year old high school student, who also just happens to be a descendant of the Juraian Royal Family. His mother, Achika, passed away when he was 6, so he lives with his father Nobuyuki and his grandfather Yosho who helps him practise his swordplay. He spends his time harvesting carrots for Ryo-oh-ki.
Approximately 2000 years old, Ryoko is the space pirate that started Tenchi on his adventures.
She was sealed in the cave by Tenchi’s grandfather Yosho for 700 years before being released by Tenchi. Before she was sealed, she tried to destroy the planet Jurai but was pursued by Yosho.
On Earth, Yosho finally defeated Ryoko by taking away her Power Gems, the source of all her power located on both of her wrists and on her left ear.
Although at first she is angry with Tenchi since she thinks he is the one who imprisoned her, she eventually comes to love him and joins the Masaki family. She is the daughter of Washu and has a cute and cuddly spaceship called Ry-oh-ki which takes on many forms.
Among all the females in the family, she is the most powerful. She has the power to teleport to another location, phase through objects, unleash destructive projectiles, has an energy sword, manipulate matter, summon demons, telekinesis, and more. If she has her third Power Gem, her powers will be almost limitless.
Aeka is the first crown princess of Jurai. She left Jurai in search for her half-brother, Yosho, (Tenchi’s grandfather) who has been gone for many years.
She also has a younger sister, Sasami, who travelled with her. She is little spoiled due to her being a princess, but she is good-natured by heart. Stranded when her spaceship crashes, her quest leads her to Earth where she joins the Masaki family.
Soon, Aeka falls in love with Tenchi and competes with Ryoko for his affections. Aeka is very formal, nice, considerate, soft-spoken, and meticulous. When she gets upset, she becomes less feminine, and because she is a descendent of the Royal House of Jurai, she possesses powers like force fields and the ability to generate energy punches. Although she has no power to throw projectiles, she is still a force to be reckoned with. Deep down, she does care for Ryoko, but never reveals it. Their friendship is based on their differences and their love for Tenchi.
8 year old Sasami is Aeka's little sister and the second crown princess of Jurai (Aeka being the first). She left her home by her sister's space ship and came to Earth.
Sasami and Ry-oh-ki are inseparable. They are the best of friends.
She is also fond of Tenchi, but her fondness for Tenchi is that of innocence. She also gets along with everyone in the Masaki household because of her outgoing and forgiving personality. For an 8 year old, she can be quite mature at times.
Approximately 2000 years old and belonging to Ryoko, Ry-oh-ki is a Cabbit, a mixture of a cat and rabbit. The nature of a rabbit is embedded in her because she loves carrots.
She is very happy most of the time and cares very much for the Masaki family. She and Sasami, Aeka’s little sister, are inseparable. She can take on 3 forms: Cabbit, humanoid, and Ry-oh-ki the space ship. Since she belongs to Ryoko, their minds are linked in which Ryoko can feel, see, and sense what Ry-oh-ki is touching, seeing, and feeling.
Her other special powers include replicating herself hundreds of times creating Ryo-Ohkis everywhere and passing through objects. The greatest trait about Ryo-Ohki is her relationship with the Masaki family. She gets along with everyone because she tries to please everyone, especially if you dangle a carrot in front of her!
Not only is Washu the Number 1 scientific genius in the universe, creating anything from electronic gadgets to biological life forms, she is also over 20,000 years old and a goddess. Her physical form is that of a 12 year old.
She created Ryoko, but once she saw what damage Ryoko did to the universe, she promised the Juraian Royal Family she would never create another like her.
When she comes to Earth in search of Ryoko, she too, goes to live with Tenchi, and persuades him to help in her mad scientist experiments. Spending most of her time in the laboratory, she is very caring and comical.
Mihoshi is a detective from the Galaxy Police in search of the evil Kagato. Partnered with Kiyone, she was on the way to Earth when her space ship was tossed in to subspace where a hole opened just above Tenchi, Aeka, Sasami, and Ryoko.
The subspace hole created a vacuum which sucked Tenchi in. While Tenchi was in the air, he accidentally rescued Mihoshi, and consequently she came to live with Tenchi as part of the Masaki family. She falls in love with Tenchi because she believes Tenchi saved her from being sucked in to subspace.
Mihoshi is your typical ditzy, air-headed blonde, and she brings new meaning to the word incompetent. She is so air-headed her attention span is worse than a fly. How she became a First-class Detective of the Galaxy Police is anyone's guess!
First-class Detective of the Galaxy Police and partner to Mihoshi, Kiyone is intelligent, ambitious, fearless, calm, and a true leader.
Kiyone is always concentrating on her work. There is rarely a time where she does something that is not related to the Galaxy Police. Needless to say, Kiyone is your typical Sherlock Holmes: scrutinising evidence, calculating plans and calm in the heat of battle, She is one of the more mature people in the Masaki family.
Yosho is Tenchi’s grandfather and the first crown prince of Jurai. 700 years ago, he was engaged to Aeka, before he left Jurai in pursuit of the space pirate Ryoko. He and Ryoko battled through the galaxies until finally reaching Earth where Yosho defeated Ryoko and imprisoned her in the cave by taking away her Power Gems. He spends his time reading scriptures, books, and training Tenchi.
Kagato's ultimate goal is to control the universe as a science experiment. While at the Galaxy Science Acadamy Kagato spent time as Washu's student/assistant.
Later he imprisoned her in a mirror and took many of her inventions for his own use (like Ryoko and Ryo-oh-ki).
His crimes earned him a place on the Eternally Wanted List (for his total disregard for human life). Like most other characters in Tenchi Muyo, Kagato can teleport to almost any location at will.
